Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. There are two types of dentures: full and partial.
If you are getting dentures for the first time, it’s recommended that you visit your dentist for a consultation. During this meeting, your dentist will evaluate your overall oral health and recommend dentures to meet your needs.
-How many teeth will need to be extracted?
-Will the extractions be performed in one visit or two?
-Will any bone grafting be needed, and if so, will it be done at the same time?
-How many visits will be needed for denture preparation and fitting?
-Will a follow-up appointment be needed after fitting the dentures?
-Will you be able to eat normal foods with the dentures?
There are two main types of dentures:
- Full dentures
- Partial dentures
Full dentures
Full dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing. Your dentist will take measurements and impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental lab where your full dentures will be custom-made.
Partial dentures
Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting. A partial denture is removable and can be taken in and out of your mouth as you please.
Caring for your dentures
You should care for and clean your dentures just as you would your natural teeth.
When cleaning your dentures, use a soft-bristled brush to lightly brush over the surface of the denture to remove food particles and plaque. Avoid using harsh household cleaners on your dentures, as these can be too abrasive and scratch the surface of the denture.
Because your mouth goes through many changes over time, and because dentures are fragile, they may require replacement or rebasing. Consult your dentist to see if your dentures need rebasing.
